Step 1: Listen and Discover
The first step in every project is to listen. Understanding the root problem is the first essential step to discovering a successful solution. This includes clearly communicating with the project stakeholders and understanding their business needs or unique situation.
Who are they, what are their assumptions, what are their needs, how will they use what is being created in "real life", and what are they ultimately wanting to accomplish?
• Listen
• Interview stakeholders to define requirements and problem
• Clearly define the project parameters and metrics for success
Step 2: Exploration - Research, Analyze, Brainstorm and Plan
After obtaining a clear understanding of the problem we're attempting to solve, I move onto researching project assets and materials, analyzing the creative brief, and exploring possible design solutions. During this phase I like to research and study various materials across the printed and digital landscape that may spark ideas and design solutions.
With enough information gathered, I begin sketching ideas, defining task flows and creating rough sketches and prototypes.
• Brainstorm ideas
• Analyze creative brief
• Research print and digital materials for inspiration
Step 3: Design and Refine
After exploring and researching potential ideas I begin the design process; this includes defining the initial elements that will be used to create the overall design system. During this process I’ll define the colors, typography, iconography, images, illustrations and overall design language and assets that will be used for the project.
Throughout the entire process, it’s important to keep an open line of communication with all parties involved. I’ll make sure to touch base with the team frequently, showing sketches and rough prototypes for validation before moving on to the refinement stage of the projects. In this stage the low-fidelity designs are further fleshed out and solidified to more closely resemble the final product.
• Design initial elements
• Define overall design language and assets
• Refine drafted designs and layouts as needed
• Frequently check-in with stakeholders for review and feedback
Step 4: Hand-Off, Assist and Monitor Development
Once the designs are final and have been approved, I’ll work with the project stakeholders throughout the development and implementation process. I’ll make sure they are clear on the designs, interactions and overall flow. This also includes coordinating with printers or other third-party vendors to ensure project delivery dates and niche requirements are met.
It's my job to support the stakeholders throughout the development process, providing all assets, details and following the development through completion.
• Collaborate, assist and monitor
• Hand-off to project stakeholders/vendors
